The Palestinian movement Hamas confirmed that Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of its political bureau, was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran.
A statement published on Hamas’ Telegram channel expressed condolences to the Palestinian people, indicating that Haniyeh was assassinated in a “treacherous Zionist attack” after attending the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new president.
According to Al Arabiya, Haniyeh died from a direct missile strike at his place of residence in Tehran at around 02:00 local time (GMT+3.30).
The Tasnim news agency, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ public relations department, reported that Iran is investigating the circumstances of the attack. The investigation will determine the causes and scope of the act, with results to be announced later.
In expressing condolences, the Tasnim agency noted the incident’s impact on the Palestinian nation, the broader Islamic community, the resistance front fighters, and the Iranian people.
The investigation is ongoing, with details expected to be released in due course.
