China pushes for BRICS expansion, approves Malaysia’s membership

China supports Malaysia’s BRICS membership, but expansion requires consensus from all members.

China is advocating for an expansion of the BRICS alliance, aiming to include new members to bolster the bloc’s influence and promote the de-dollarization agenda.

This strategy seeks to challenge the dominance of the US and its allies on the global stage by encouraging the use of local currencies in international trade.

Recently, Malaysia submitted an application to join BRICS, and China has expressed strong support for this inclusion, with Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian highlighting the desire for a fairer international order.

However, the expansion of BRICS is a consensus-based process, requiring the approval of all existing members. While China and Russia are eager to include Malaysia, other BRICS nations, particularly India, have shown reservations.

The Modi government has suggested pausing the induction of new members for five years to establish clear policies and rules, contrasting with the expansionist views of China and Russia.
