MST Coordinator Demands More from Lulas Government on Agrarian Reform

MST pushes for further action on agrarian reform from Lulas administration.

The Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) is calling for more action from Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government in its third term regarding agrarian reform. MST’s national coordinator, João Paulo Rodrigues, highlighted the progress made under the current administration but stressed the need for additional advancements.

Rodrigues expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Agrarian Development’s proposal on land acquisition, emphasizing the pressure being exerted by MST to ensure that all 65,000 families in camps are settled next year. The recent approval by the National Monetary Council of a resolution allowing resettled families access to credit for the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture was welcomed by the movement.

Rodrigues discussed the forthcoming meeting with President Lula in Brasília, addressing topics such as the National Education Program in Agrarian Reform, housing, and budget adjustments. He emphasized the importance of not cutting expenses at the expense of workers, advocating for a focus on the agricultural sector that currently pays minimal taxes.

The ongoing struggle with the government includes discussions on fiscal adjustments and the need to prioritize the well-being of workers. Rodrigues emphasized the need for a fair and equitable approach that does not burden the agricultural sector, which currently faces challenges related to budget cuts.
