Government base delays voting on Beaches PEC in Senate Judiciary Committee

Impact on livelihoods and ecosystems debated by organizations and environmentalists

The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the vote on the Beaches PEC, known as PEC 3/2022, following a request for a collective review by the government base.

Currently, beaches are public areas under federal jurisdiction, with open access to all. They are also public areas of marine land, located within a 33-meter strip from the average tide line registered in 1831, towards the land.

The PEC proposes transferring federal jurisdiction over marine land to states, municipalities, and private entities, sparking criticism from social and environmental organizations for its privatization and potential environmental impact.

Senator Rogerio Carvalho criticized the PEC for favoring real estate speculation over public interest and highlighted concerns about coastal area occupation without proper study and regulation.
