BH City Council approves law project to combat gender-based political violence

Measure aims to protect elected and appointed women in public roles

The City Council of Belo Horizonte (CMBH) approved the Law Project (PL) 899/2024. The proposal, voted on this Thursday (5), aims to prevent and hold accountable behaviors and attitudes of political violence, specifically against women.

The measure seeks to establish the Municipal Policy for Confronting Political Violence Against Women and establish ways to protect and report individual or collective actions that directly or indirectly affect women candidates, elected or appointed to public positions.

The project is an initiative of the parliamentarians Cida Falabella and Iza Lourença, both Psol councilwomen, who were threatened with death and rape in October 2023. In addition to the Psol councilwomen, parliamentarians Professora Nara (Rede) and Professora Marli (PP) also participated in the proposal.

Iza Lourença highlighted the importance of the project’s approval. “Confronting gender-based political violence is defending our democracy, because it is not possible to speak of democracy while women are underrepresented in positions of power.”
