Baath Party supports transition in Syria after Assads deposition

The Baath Party, led by former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, announced on Monday its support for the transition phase in the country after the president was ousted by a rebel coalition. The party’s secretary-general, Ibrahim al-Hadid, stated that they are in favor of a transition phase in Syria to defend the country’s unity.

The leader of the Syrian rebels, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, met with former Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali to coordinate the transition of power, as announced by the rebels after overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad. Al-Jolani, now using his real name Ahmad al-Shareh, emphasized the need for a transition of power that ensures the provision of services to the Syrian population.

In a speech at a mosque in Damascus, Al-Jolani declared victory as a triumph for the entire Islamic community. He distanced himself from his past affiliation with Al Qaeda, stating that everyone goes through phases. However, the HTS group continues to be considered a terrorist group by Western governments.

The Syrian Parliament expressed its willingness to accept the will of the people, with many gathering at Umayyad Square to celebrate. The European Union emphasized the imperative of a peaceful and orderly transition, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stressed the importance of accountability for the crimes committed by the Assad government.
