US Conditions for New Syrian Rulers

US sets condition for new Syrian government regarding Iran.

Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, commented on the US condition that the new government in Damascus should exclude Tehran’s role in Syria.

After a meeting between the US representative and al-Jolani, head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Washington made it clear that good ties with the new Syrian government would depend on Iran not having a role in the country.

The US had similarly advised the Muslim Brotherhood led by former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, but later abandoned him when the time came, according to Amani.

Following armed groups led by al-Jolani taking control of Damascus, Bashar al-Assad’s government fell on December 8, marking a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape.
