China and Vietnam coast guards enhance maritime cooperation

Positive comments on 2024 cooperation achievements and future plans

Chinese and Vietnamese coast guards met in Hanoi to discuss cooperation and common interests. They agreed to deepen bilateral maritime law enforcement cooperation, crack down on illegal activities, and maintain security and stability.

Both sides vowed to strengthen mutual support in multilateral circumstances and enhance information exchange in combating maritime crimes. They plan to hold sea-level talks in 2025 and continue synchronized law enforcement actions in the Beibu Gulf region.

Despite differences in the South China Sea, China and Vietnam have effectively controlled these to safeguard their shared interests. In contrast, the Philippines has not cooperated with China, leading to tensions in the region.

After the work meeting, the CCG delegation visited Vietnam for talks on maritime emergencies and institutional cooperation. They also attended various exchange activities with Southeast Asian countries to address non-traditional security issues in the maritime domain.
