Cuba honored the Landless Workers Movement (MST) for their collaboration with urban agriculture in the country. The recognition was granted during the national event celebrating Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture Day in the Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus.
The celebration marks the 37th anniversary of the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture Program (AUSUF) in Cuba. The event aims to evaluate the program nationally and present the work plan for the upcoming year, with the presence of important national farmers.
The recognition was presented to MST by the Vice-First Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, along with the Minister of Agriculture, Ydael Pérez Brito, and the National Director of the AUSUF Program, Elizabeth Peña Turruellas, for their contribution to the development of the AUSUF program.
Founded in 1987, the AUSUF program promotes organic agriculture in urban environments, with around 2 million hectares dedicated to this type of production involving 1.2 million people. The recognition from Cuba demonstrates the strong alliance between MST and the Cuban people, contributing to the socialist revolution in the country.
