The Mayor of Londrina, Tiago Amaral, from the PSD party, hinted at the closure of the Municipal Secretariat of Women’s Policies in a communication published last Thursday (16). The announcement sparked reactions among popular and feminist organizations in the city. According to the new administration’s information, the goal is to merge the Women’s, Elderly, and Social Assistance secretariats into a future department named Family and Social Development.
During the 2024 electoral race, Tiago Amaral signed a commitment letter where one of the terms stipulated the strengthening of the Municipal Secretariat of Women’s Policies, one of the first established in the country with over thirty years of history.
In a statement, the Feminist Health Network recognizes the importance of maintaining the secretariat and points out that “the measure goes against recent advances,” emphasizing that the municipality has “specific municipal funding and a Municipal Plan for Women’s Policies, mechanisms that allow for resource allocation and transparent policy management.”
Sociologist and member of the State Council for Women’s Rights, Carmen Regina Ribeiro, highlights that “municipal women’s secretariats have an essential function of articulating other public policies executed by other bodies, such as health, social assistance, education, work, and employment secretariats.”
