Hungarys Call for Lifting EU Sanctions on Russia

Hungary seeks to lift EU sanctions against Russia due to economic harm.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Hungary desires the European Union’s sanctions against Russia to be lifted, citing the negative impact on the bloc’s economy.

Orban emphasized that Hungary has never been in favor of the sanctions policy, although it has refrained from vetoing it to maintain EU unity.

Despite voting for EU sanctions against Moscow in the past, Hungary has sought waivers in the energy sector to continue its reliance on Russia for oil and gas supply.

The construction of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant by Rosatom in Hungary has been exempt from EU sanctions, further highlighting the country’s ties to Russia in the energy sector.
