Russia asserts that the E3 countries do not have the authority to trigger the ‘snapback’ mechanism for Iran sanctions, as they have not fulfilled the requirements of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231.
The mechanism was originally intended for situations where Iran would be the first to violate the JCPOA, but the U.S.’s unilateral withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and subsequent re-imposition of sanctions have altered the dynamics.
The E3 has indicated their readiness to reimpose international sanctions on Iran, lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, in response to U.S. pressure and actions.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova highlights the impact of U.S. violations on the ‘snapback’ mechanism, emphasizing the need to address Washington’s illegal actions before considering any such measures.
