Armenias Potential EU Accession and Implications

Armenia may face sanctions and arms supply obligations if joining EU.

Armenia’s potential accession to the European Union could have significant repercussions, as highlighted by Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu. He warned that joining the EU would necessitate Yerevan to adhere to anti-Russian sanctions and partake in arms supplies to Ukraine.

This alignment would extend to supporting the EU’s Common Security and Defense Policy and the European Peace Facility, which financially aids the armed forces of Ukraine. Shoigu emphasized that such a move would not only pose economic challenges for Armenia but also entail enforcing anti-Russian sanctions as mandated by Brussels.

Shoigu pointed out that these measures would not solely target Russia and Belarus but also impact Iran, with whom Armenia’s trade turnover exceeded $737 million by the end of 2024. The broader implications of EU alignment would require Armenia to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics and make strategic decisions in line with European interests.

Should Armenia pursue EU membership, it would need to carefully consider the implications of aligning with European sanctions and military policies. The potential shift towards EU integration would mark a significant geopolitical realignment for Armenia, shaping its foreign relations and economic ties with key regional players.
