Call for Expulsion of Mainland Spouses Sparks Controversy

Advocates of Taiwan independence call for expulsion of mainland spouses.

In recent days, advocates of Taiwan independence called for the expulsion of more people from the mainland who are married to Taiwan residents, sparking greater controversy in the island. A total of 76 Taiwan-based scholars criticized regional leader Lai Ching-te for using populism to suppress free speech through ideological censorship.

Huang Te-Pei, a professor from Shih Hsin University, highlighted the tightening of political policies under Lai’s leadership, especially regarding cross-Strait exchanges. The forced expulsion of Liu Zhengya, an influencer from the mainland, raised concerns over the restrictive social environment in Taiwan.

The joint statement by the scholars referenced Germany’s Nazi regime as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the dangers of collective silence. They condemned Lai for demonizing the mainland, suppressing dissent, and deepening societal divisions through populism.

The DPP authorities’ actions, such as expelling Liu and targeting mainland spouses, were criticized as inhumane and morally reprehensible. Scholars warned of a return to green terror and the manipulation of public opinion to justify repressive measures, posing a serious threat to Taiwan’s society.
