Canada imposed sanctions on five Venezuelan government officials on Tuesday, questioning the results of Venezuela’s elections and claiming it is pressuring Caracas to respect the will of the people.
In response, the Venezuelan foreign ministry called the measures “extortionate and illegal,” accusing Canada of subservience to the US government.
The Canadian government did not specify the limitations of these sanctions on the five Venezuelans, stating that they were involved in activities undermining democracy in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government criticized Canada’s actions as attempts to humiliate and discredit Venezuela internationally, accusing Ottawa of serving the interests of the US imperialists.
