CNJ approves correction of death records of dictatorship victims

The National Council of Justice (CNJ) has decided that the death records of victims of the military dictatorship should be corrected to indicate that their deaths were caused by the persecution promoted by the regime. This decision was made unanimously by the CNJ plenary, composed of 15 councilors, who approved the change through a resolution.

President of the CNJ and the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, stated that this change is a legitimate settlement with the past. The magistrate himself was the rapporteur of the normative act, which stemmed from a proposal previously presented by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC).

The Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo, emphasized the importance of the Truth Commission, a temporary body that operated between 2011 and 2014 to investigate violations of rights during the military dictatorship. The correction of death records is part of this agenda, seeking justice for the victims and their families.

Minister Macaé Evaristo also highlighted the importance of defending democracy and the right to truth for all individuals. The action to correct the death records is seen as a step towards healing, reaffirming democracy, and insisting on the right of all to know the truth. It is a reminder that all democratic institutions must be protected.
