Crisis escalates in Syria as Israel reinforces presence

Military actions deepen crisis post-Assads government downfall

Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government on Sunday, the country is plunged into a deeper crisis with bombings in Damascus and Israel’s military mobilization in the Golan Heights.

The Israeli airstrikes targeted a security complex in the Syrian capital, causing intense fires in the buildings hit, as reported by an AFP correspondent on the scene.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to enter a demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights in response to the Syrian forces’ withdrawal from the region, citing the collapse of Assad’s regime as a historic day in the Middle East.

Israeli troops have been reinforced in the Golan Heights due to the advance of Syrian rebels, with Israel assisting UN peacekeepers in repelling an attack near Hader, a buffer zone controlled by blue helmets.
