Ex-president of Uruguay Mujica recovering well after successful esophageal cancer surgery

Mujicas recovery is going smoothly after surgery; expected to spend weekend in hospital

The 89-year-old former president of Uruguay, José Pepe Mujica, is recovering smoothly after a successful surgery related to his esophageal cancer, said his doctor, Raquel Pannone, on Friday.

Now he is calm, he is tranquil, and will remain hospitalized over the weekend until he is better and ready to return home, said Pannone to journalists.

A former guerrilla fighter, president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 and one of the most emblematic figures of the left in Latin America, Mujica is recovering after treatment for esophageal cancer diagnosed in May this year.

Pannone explained that an endoscopy performed on Monday showed that Mujica’s esophagus had narrowed, making it difficult for him to ingest food orally.
