Fires in Los Angeles leave two dead and 100,000 evacuated

Wildfires in California suburbs with firefighters battling water shortages

Wildfires in Los Angeles, on the west coast of the United States, have left at least two dead, several injured, and around 100,000 people evacuated, authorities reported on Wednesday.

The city is covered in gray and orange clouds, with fallen trees and broken palm trees due to strong winds reaching between 70 and 145 kilometers per hour, hindering firefighters’ work.

Firefighting efforts are complicated by the spread of the flames, leading emergency services to their limits, said Kristin Cowley, from the city’s fire department.

The wildfires started in a low humidity environment, coinciding with the strong Santa Ana winds in the region, highlighting the impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of wildfires in the area.
