Iran and Iraq strengthen security ties

Tehran and Baghdad commit to enhanced security cooperation.

In a meeting in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised the strong relations between Tehran and Baghdad across all fields. He emphasized the importance of security cooperation between the two countries, highlighting its role in fostering bilateral relations, especially in economic aspects.

Araghchi stressed that Iraq’s security is closely linked to Iran’s security, and he expressed hope for sustainable security in the border areas through the full implementation of the security agreement between the two nations. He also mentioned President Masoud Pezeshkian’s efforts during his visit to Iraq in September to advance bilateral agreements and expand ties.

On the other hand, Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji updated Araghchi on the progress in implementing the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad, affirming Iraq’s commitment to fully enforce the accord. Al-Araji highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq as neighboring countries in the region.

Al-Araji further stated that Iraq considers Iran’s security as its own, and any threats against Iran would be met with action by the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The security pact signed between Tehran and Baghdad in 2023 includes provisions to combat separatist terrorist groups targeting Iran.
