Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani arrived in Tehran, Iran, amidst reports that he received a message from US President-elect Donald Trump. He was welcomed by Iranian Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Abdolnaser Hemmati at Mehrabad Airport.
President Pezeshkian officially welcomed al-Sudani at the Saadabad cultural complex in northern Tehran and the two officials held a joint press conference. Advisor to the Iranian president, Mehdi Sanaei, mentioned on social media that discussions on regional and bilateral issues would take place between the two leaders.
Earlier reports from Iraqi Shafaq News suggested that al-Sudani had received a “special” message from Trump, concerning “Iranian-backed” groups in Iraq. However, Iranian officials have not confirmed if the content of the message will be discussed in the meetings.
The visit signifies a diplomatic exchange between Iraq and Iran, potentially addressing sensitive geopolitical matters that involve the US and regional alliances. The presence of al-Sudani in Tehran highlights the complex dynamics of the Middle East and the role of key players in shaping the region’s future.
