The Municipal Chamber of Porto Alegre held the inauguration ceremony for councilors and councilwomen elected for the next term, as well as the mayor and vice-mayor on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, starting at 3 p.m.
The ceremony was marked by a strong political contrast. While Marcelo Ustra Soares (PL), an elected councilor with reference to the torturer of the military dictatorship (1964-1985) Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, took office, Juliana de Souza (PT) will start her term by presenting a bill proposing the creation of the Parliamentary Front for Memory, Truth, and Transitional Justice in the municipality.
According to the new councilwoman, the proposal aims to investigate human rights violations in Porto Alegre and promote policies of reparation, contributing to the strengthening of democracy and democratic values.
During the inauguration ceremony, Juliana will wear a t-shirt with the image of former president Dilma Rousseff and the phrase “Torture Never Again”, in homage to the repression victims and as a political stance against the rise of figures who exalt the military dictatorship.
