Milei announces nuclear energy stimulus in Argentina despite cuts in science and technology

President Milei promises nuclear reactors for AI servers, sparking controversy

On Friday, President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced plans to install nuclear reactors to power AI servers in the country, a move criticized by industry experts.

Nuclear energy is seen as the only sufficiently efficient, abundant, and rapidly scalable source to address the development needs of our civilization, according to Milei.

As part of his fiscal surplus plan, Milei has cut 35,000 public sector jobs, reduced the number of ministries, and slashed the budget for science and technology, impacting the country’s main nuclear energy program.

Former head of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) Adriana Serquis criticized Milei for ignoring an advanced SMR project called Carem, which is close to completion.
