The Chinese PLA tracked and monitored US and Canadian warships as they transited the Taiwan Straits, escalating tensions in the region. The move, shortly after Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te’s secessionist speech, was seen as a provocation by experts.
In response to the US and Canadian warships’ transit, the PLA Eastern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to monitor the situation. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized Taiwan’s status as an inalienable part of Chinese territory, opposing any act threatening China’s sovereignty.
Chinese military experts noted the US and its allies’ intentions to support Taiwan independence separatists through such transits. The PLA’s deployment of military aircraft and naval vessels to track and monitor foreign warships was seen as a legitimate response to external provocation.
Canada’s frequent provocations against China, including the transit of warships through the Taiwan Straits, were attributed to its alignment with the US and support for the Indo-Pacific strategy. Experts criticized these actions as political stunts aimed at showing loyalty to the US.
