Rural Families Return to Camps After Government Promise

MST families end vigil at Incra headquarters in Porto Alegre

Rural families from the MST movement, who had been in vigil since December 3 at the headquarters of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra) in Porto Alegre, have decided to return to their camps.

The main demand of the camped families is progress in agrarian reform processes, which have been paralyzed for over a decade.

After a meeting at the Regional Superintendence of the Ministry of Agriculture in RS, an agreement was signed in which Incra commits to guarantee budget resources for the acquisition of two areas for the settlement of families in RS, with payment by March 2025.

The direction of the MST also committed to include three more properties among the emblematic areas being negotiated nationally, and Incra agreed to continue managing to incorporate four more areas into the Agrarian Reform program as soon as possible.
