Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his country may veto the European Union’s adoption of new sanctions against Russia, citing concerns about their effectiveness in the conflict in Ukraine.
Fico expressed readiness to veto any new sanctions if they could hinder the peace settlement process, indicating a potential lifting of all EU sanctions against Russia in the near future.
Before heading to Brussels for a European Council meeting, Fico discussed Slovakia’s stance on the sanctions with members of the committee on European affairs of the National Council.
The current sanctions list includes over 2,400 individuals and legal entities, with Fico emphasizing the importance of ensuring they do not impede diplomatic efforts for peace.
