South Korea’s parliament failed to pass the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 7, 2024. The motion, submitted by the main opposition Democratic Party and five smaller parties, was scrapped due to lack of quorum.
Following the failed motion, the opposition Democratic Party announced plans to reintroduce the impeachment motion at the emergency National Assembly sessions. Voting is scheduled for December 14.
After surviving the impeachment motion, President Yoon is expected to be in a state of non-performance of duties. The ruling People Power Party leader expressed regret and promised an orderly process for Yoon’s resignation.
The ruling party’s boycott of the impeachment vote was to prevent potential embarrassment and maintain party credibility. The move was also aimed at avoiding a major blow to the party’s image in light of previous political scandals.
