US and Ukraine to discuss peace efforts in Saudi Arabia

US and Ukraine to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss ceasefire.

US and Ukrainian officials are planning to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss issues related to resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff mentioned that Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed readiness for peace talks in a letter to President Trump, which was seen as a positive first step.

Efforts are underway to coordinate a meeting in Riyadh or potentially Jeddah to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire. The Axios news website reported that discussions to reach a ceasefire will take place at the meeting on March 12.

The Trump administration aims to link a proposed US-Ukraine minerals deal to demands for a quick ceasefire with Russia. A previous meeting between Zelensky and Trump escalated into a shouting match, leading to the suspension of military aid to Ukraine.

Despite Ukraine’s statement that Zelensky did not send a letter to Trump, the situation remains tense. Trump’s criticism of Zelensky’s alleged disrespect and lack of readiness for peace has strained the relationship between the two countries.
