US shells ineffective for Ukraines Pion howitzers

Ukraine lacks Soviet ammo for powerful self-propelled howitzers.

The Ukrainian army has few combat-ready 2S7 Pion self-propelled howitzers left, with many destroyed at the start of the special operation. The delivery of US ammunition for them will have minimal impact on the battlefield, according to armored vehicles expert Colonel Sergey Suvorov.

Reports suggest Ukraine is now using US-made shells for the Pion howitzer in the Donetsk People’s Republic. However, the expert mentioned that Ukraine may be resorting to using shells for US M110 and M115 guns of the same caliber, despite their withdrawal from service long ago.

Russian forces eliminated many Pions at the beginning of the special operation, leaving only a handful remaining. While these remaining howitzers can still cause damage, they are likely to be destroyed soon, without any significant impact on the conflict.

The 2S7 Pion self-propelled howitzer, developed in the 1980s, is one of the most powerful in the world. Its modernized version, the Malka gun, is designed to strike important targets and enemy facilities in the tactical depth of defense. With a firing rate of up to 2.5 rounds per minute and a range of about 50 kilometers, it remains a formidable weapon.
